Project Title : Freedom Park

The competition for creating a public park in the location of a jail in the centre of Bangalore was an opportunity for an Indian city to reconstitute its Urban Design. The concept of the design emerged from the idea of a spiral of movement that moved along various concepts of liberty expressed through landscape elements like water pools, plazas, woodlands, sculpture parks, children play areas and other greens. The existing radial organisation of the jail morphed into the spiral creating wedge-shaped subdivisions that were locations of the various landscapes. An inversion of associations was attempted where the central tower became the spire of aspirations. All existing trees on site were retained and water moved along the existing gradient and harvested.
